Kidney failure is wide spread in India with around 20 million cases currently and adding each year. the most common causes of kidney failure are diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and untreated stone disease. When kidneys function at less than 50% some form of renal replacement therapy is required. Most commonly patients are started on dialysis, but dialysis is temporary solution to a permanent problem. On long term dialysis life expectancy is not more than 3-5 years. Ideal treatment for kidney failure is transplant.In the long term it is the most financially viable treatment also. As per the rules setup by government of India any related family member can donate his/her kidney to the patient. The success rate of kidney transplant is around 97% and the recipient can expect to live a normal life for unto 20 years after a transplant though he must remain on life long follower and be regular with his medicines. With the advent of laparoscopic surgeries the donor can also resume his normal work after 4-5 days and expect to live a normal life.
